COMMUNITY LIAISON ˜ EDUCATIONAL SPECIALIST ˜

SERVANT LEADER ˜ SPIRITUAL ADVISOR

Dr. Willard G. Maxwell, Jr. is a results-focused educator, administrator, community leader and spiritual advisor with proven ability to create positive, sustained change through education and economic empowerment. He effectively leads and manages teams in a myriad of sectors including: entrepreneurship, higher education, non-profit, civic and ministerial organizations. He is recognized and respected as an agile leader with an extraordinary ability to galvanize and move organizations and communities forward through innovation, inspiration and education.

He began his journey of public service in 1997 as an exceptional education teacher in the Atlanta Public Schools system. His remarkable ability to create change caused him to quickly advance to the role of principal. Dr. Maxwell often cites the early years in education as the grooming grounds for the leader he is today. He currently serves as the Senior Pastor of New Beech Grove Baptist Church where his interactive approach to pastoral leadership creates and cultivates a culture of innovation, leadership and a commitment to spiritual and personal growth. Dr. Maxwell believes in order to be an effective leader, you have to be a great follower. You have to understand and submit to authority, as long as their practices are not unethical. I’m glad I experienced serving as a principal and a real estate broker before becoming a pastor because those administrative skills gave me my business acumen and taught me to hold myself and those I’m leading accountable.

Dr. Maxwell serves as volunteer Police Chaplain because he believes that you can’t make a difference in a community without knowing the people of the community. He also serves as the NAACP president and a member of the Police Foundation Board. When asked what’s next for Newport News, Dr. Maxwell responded, “One of the opportunities I’m looking forward to for the future is my run for Newport News City Council. I’m always working in the community, and I believe that I can unite City Council without focusing on politics or personal agendas, but rather, putting the citizens of Newport News first.”
